This symposium aims to review recent developments in the field of solidification from both experimental and theoretical points of views. It will cover the topics of processes, mushy zone dynamics, microstructure and defects analyzed with the help of modern materials science and engineering tools such as modelling and in situ observations. The emphasis is placed on nucleation and growth kinetics, rapid solidification, phase competition, microsegregation, dendritic, eutectic and peritectic microstructures, porosity, residual stresses, distortions, hot tearing, micro- and macro-segregation. Contributions presenting novel characterisation techniques and property measurements are warmly encouraged, as well as numerical simulations of solidification processes, microstructures, defects and properties. Industries are very welcome to share their experience with academic researchers.
