The topics of the symposium are design, processing, properties and microstructure of novel steels with focus on TRIP (transformation-induced plasticity) and TWIP (twinning-induced plasticity) steels as well as steel-based composite materials. Since several years, modern steels like TRIP and TWIP steels have a renaissance in materials science and engineering and are again in the focus of many scientific investigations concerning both mechanical as well as microstructural features. In particular, the hardening mechanisms of martensitic transformations and twinning are studied with new microstructural and simulation techniques. Moreover, several companies are introducing TRIP and TWIP steels into market. Therefore, much scientific interest rises in all topics related to these materials.In addition, new concepts for modern steels as well as steel-matrix composited are under development worldwide. These materials also gain increasing interest due to superior mechanical properties in terms of strength and wear resistance.
